SUB-DEPARTMENTS OF HEAT-AND-POWER ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

 

The department graduate experts in heat and nuclear power engineering field, research and automation of heat-and-power processes, computer technologies in power engineering, which are able to design, exploit and tune up power equipment of  thermoelectric and nuclear power stations (TPS and NPS) and industrial enterprises, modern computerized control and management systems of enterprises of power complex.

Graduate  terms: bachelor's degree – 4 years; master's degree – 2 years.

  • The graduates work on engineering and management positions of power subdivisions of industrial enterprises, TPS and NPS, designing and  scientific research institutes of NAS of Ukraine, administrators information and computer systems and networks in state, private, scientific, industrial organizations and firms.

Thermal Engineering faculty (TEF) – one of the oldest faculties of KPI, was founded in 1931 as a Heating Engineering Faculty (HEF) of the Kievan power institute (KPI). The first deans of HEF were professor M.A. Kondak (1931-1932) and professor I.T. Shvec (1933-1934) – both heat engineering engineers-mechanics, graduates of the mechanical faculty of the KPI, where starting from 1898 - opening of the institute – untill its disbandment in 1930 steam technique engineers training was conducted (steam-engines, turbines, steam-boilers, locomotives, etc).
Thanks to professor I.T.Shvec’s initiative in 1938 Thermal Engineering faculty was restored to KPI in composition of five departments:

Sub-department graduates may undertake research and development focused on creation and implementation of the systems of automation of the technical process based on typical decisions using modern electrical and microprocessor controls, develop software as well as carry out assembly, setting up and servicing of operating computerized systems.

Sub-department’s activity is directed on the development of leading edge information technologies and on training of qualified specialists on the expert systems development as well as on the development of different physical objects modeling and designing automation systems. The purpose of training is to release the specialists who will be able to perform almost all tasks which require computer usage as well as to be able to adapt to constant changes and improvements of computer devices.

Thermal power plants

 

This sub-department trains heat and power engineers to work at: thermal power plants, assembly organization, presetting organizations, repair bases, energetic associations, Ministry of Fuel and Energy subdivisions, design, research and educational institutes of Ukraine.
The sub-department places high emphasis on educational process with usage of ecologically clean energy-saving production technologies of electrical and heat energy, on computer technologies,  gas turbine and combined-cycle plants, on world experience in new modern power technology branch, on questions of technical upgrading, reconstruction and modernization of energy objects.

This sub-department has an advanced scientific part, wherein a large volume of  research and design works with the participation of  teachers, scientists and students is being performed in traditional and nuclear engineering, power saving, reliability and safety growth of thermal and thermal-nuclear power plants, in developments of new high-efficiency heat transfer devices and its computational methods.

Sub-department graduates receive a higher education in specialty and a Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree.
Specialty graduates are heat engineers with encyclopedic knowledge, who after adaptation may take part in production and technologic, organizational and managing, design and research work in exploitation, development, implementation, assembling, adjustment, maintenance support, repair, modernization of heat energy and thermal technological energy delivering and energy consuming equipment, stations and systems.
